Maputo Accord: SME Financing

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to job creation, fostering innovation and diversifying economies, making them central to reducing poverty and building sustainable growth. Despite this, limited access to finance is an ongoing challenge faced in SME development, particularly in emerging economies and in the aftermath of a financial crisis.

Launched during the 2015 AFI GPF in Maputo, Mozambique, the accord commits network members to supports access to finance for SMEs. The responsibilities outlined in the accord are supported on the ground through AFI’s SME Finance (SMEF) Working Group, which focuses on conducting internal surveys and developing knowledge products that measure SME access to finance.
